The spirit of the season will come alive through music and verse at “Sounds of the Season,” a collaboration between Musical Theatre, Music and Spiritual Life. The concert will be on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m., in Callaway Auditorium.
This festive and meaningful program will combine holiday classics with poetry and scripture readings centered around peace. Highlights include beloved songs like “Carol of the Bells” and “The First Noel.”
The performers include the LC singers, the new 17-member LC faculty/staff choir and readers from both on and off campus.
Freshman Alexa Fontanez, a member of the LC Singers, said singing stems from a lifelong passion.
“I participated in the choir throughout high school, and that was something I did not want to stop doing in college,” she said. “I love this group of singers at LC because we all help each other. It's amazing to be part of this community.”
One of the poignant features of the evening will be the lighting of the Advent wreath. During the reading of an old Spanish carol by freshman Solomon Morgan, President Susanna Baxter and local schoolchildren will participate in the ceremonial candle lighting.
“This collaboration brings a special tone to our holiday celebration,” said Theatre Arts Professor Kim Barber Knoll. “With the beautiful integration of music and poetry, we've created something truly unique for the community.”
Choir Director and LaGrange College alumna Alyese Cross ’14 finds meaning in leading this concert at her alma mater.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed being able to be back in my element,” Cross said. “Participating in the choir was one of my favorite memories from my time as a student at LaGrange College, and I thoroughly enjoyed all the music and performances surrounding the Christmas season. So, to be back now as the choir director has been such a blessing and an enjoyable experience.”
“Music and poetry have a beautiful way of touching our hearts and transforming how we see the world,” said Chaplain and Director of Spiritual Life the Rev. Ashley Jenkins ’08. “Through carefully selected poems, verses and moving melodies, ‘Sounds of the Season’ invites the community to discover the heart of Christmas—finding the lost, healing the broken and bringing peace through music.”
